Mozilla Firefox 3.0 alpha 4

Platform Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP
Type
freeware
Manufacturer Mozilla
Size
6.19MB
Free download

With the forthcoming release of Mozilla Firefox 3.0, planned for 2007, the web graphics rendering engine will receive a completely new upgrade. Dubbed ‘ Cairo’, the new graphics rendering engine should improve the output across different platforms, as it’s being developed as an open-standard (see http://wiki.mozilla.org/Cairo). Mozilla Firefox 3.0 will also be based around the forthcoming Gecko 1.9 rendering engine.

With other improvements in the way that pages are ‘painted’ onscreen, improved SVG support and CSS enhancements, the general improvements for Firefox 3.0 are based around the way it will render web pages through the browser.

Note that further improvements and new features will be included within Firefox 3.0 as it is being developed. This 3.0 alpha 4 (dubbed “Gran Paradiso”, rather than Firefox) is an early developer preview.

Mozilla “Gran Paradiso” Alpha 4 is being made available for testing purposes only, and is intended for web application developers and our testing community. Current users of Mozilla Firefox should not use Mozilla Gran Paradiso Alpha 4.

McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox 26.1

Platform Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Mac OS X, Linux
Type freeware
Manufacturer McAfee
Size 40Kb
Download.

Even with the better security of Firefox compared with Internet Explorer, McAfee Site Advisor is a good way to sort the good from the bad online.

Once installed it appears as small area of text in the bottom right hand corner of the browser window. This changes colour depending on the website. Green signifies a website that can be trusted, yellow a site that might send lots of emails or red for sites that are known to send spam or bundle adware into downloads.

Clicking on this text gives the option to read more information about the site. This includes the number of emails received after registration and whether the website links to any suspicious sites. Downloads hosted on the site are also checked.

Most websites are tested by computers at McAfee but it is possible to submit a user report if you feel that a website has been the cause of spam or adware.

In this case the website will be looked at by a member of the McAfee team, rather than relying on automatic checking. The site owner can also leave a message responding to the rating.

Firefox Backup Extension 4.04

Platform Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP
Type freeware
Manufacturer Custom Software Consulting
Size 353Kb
Download.

We all like routine and we like to customise our web browsers, both at home at work, with the same bookmarks, extensions, ‘look and feel’ and much more. However, we have the time at home to make all the necessary changes, but at work we’re often stuck with a basic web browser, simply as we don’t have the time to customise.

Google recently released a Firefox extension that enabled you to backup your bookmarks and passwords, so the browser information stored on one computer could be transferred to another machine – that machine could be at work, home or a temporary machine such as a loaned laptop.

The Firefox Backup Extension goes much further and enables you to backup just about everything, including your themes, preferences, bookmarks and more. You can even backup your entire profile. You can then move this information to another copy of Firefox or, in case of a system crash, restore your preferences.

There is a key difference between this and the Google extension. The Google extension uses an online Google account to store your Firefox info and, whenever you start Firefox (and on whatever computer you use Firefox), your preferences are synchronised between your web browser and secure online account.

The Mozilla Foundation is warning of a critical bug in the new Firefox 2.0 browser that could leave passwords vulnerable to hackers.

The new flaw is in the Password Manager feature of the browser, which stores log-in details for websites so that users do not have to input them every time they visit a protected website.

Users are vulnerable because the Password Manager fails to verify that the URL is legitimate.

The flaw was discovered by Robert Chapin of Chapin Information Services and seems to affect all versions of Firefox, and may also affect Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

"Given the new nature of this type of attack, Chaplin has named this a Reverse Cross-Site Request [RCSR] vulnerability," said the company.

"This flaw could affect anyone visiting a blog or forum website that allows user-contributed HTML code to be added."

Chaplin claims that the attack has already been used to steal the log-in details of MySpace users, who were redirected to a false log-in page where their details were harvested.

The bug is as yet unpatched and Mozilla is advising users to turn off the Password Manager feature until a fix is available.

Mozilla has released updates for its Firefox browser, Thunderbird e-mail application and the SeaMonkey application suite to fix "critical" security vulnerabilities.
The vulnerabilities affect 1.5 versions of Firefox and Thunderbird as well as version 1 of the SeaMonkey suite, Mozilla said in its security advisories. The bugs do not affect Firefox 2.0, the latest version of the browser released late last month.

"The security vulnerabilities could be exploited by malicious people to bypass security restrictions, conduct cross-site scripting attacks and potentially compromise a vulnerable system," Secunia said in its alert.

Mozilla plans to support Firefox 1.5 until April 24, 2007, six months after it shipped Firefox 2. The security flaws are fixed in Firefox 1.5.0.8, Thunderbird 1.5.0.8 and SeaMonkey 1.0.6. The previous Firefox security update was released in September.

Fasterfox 2.0-Speed up Mozilla Firefox

Platform Windows 2000, Windows XP
Type freeware
Manufacturer Tony Gentilcore
Size 115Kb
Download Here.

Firefox 2.0 is fast, although there’s an option to make it even faster. By using pre-fetching technology, when you load a web page, Fasterfox will quietly go and fetch the content from the links on the web page, assuming that you’re more than likely to visit a link from that page.

For instance, if you saw a news story on the index page of the VNUnet.com website, click on the news story and it will appear instantaneously. This is down to Fasterfox pre-loading the content so that Firefox doesn’t need to wait for the web link to load (and load all the relevant images). It can show the page immediately.

Fasterfox enables you to customise your setup, so that this pre-fetching technique works effectively on your system. You can choose the number of pages you want to keep in memory, the pipeline requests (keep this low to prevent the server from banning your IP address as it may think your attempting to flood their system with IP requests) and the DNS cache expiration settings.

Mozilla Firefox, the popular web browser, caused a stir with the original release, but apart from minor changes, visual improvements and security fixes, there haven’t been a wide range of new features since the original 1.x release. This is all about to change, with the forthcoming release of Firefox 2.0, planned for October/November 2006.

This is Release Candidate 3 and the third public preview of Firefox 2.0, along with a snapshot of the forthcoming new features. It must be noted that this is only a pre-release and should be used for testing-purposes only. Many of the existing themes and extensions are not operating within this beta release.

Other new features include enhanced tabbed browsing, the ability to open tabs closed accidentally, spell checking within web forms, a search plugin manager, combined and enhanced Add-Ons manager and much more, including support for new web standards.

Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7
Firefox is built with speed in mind, and does away with many of the components of its big sister, Mozilla. Therefore, all you get is a browser, download manager and a DOM inspector (for developers).

This results in a tiny download and a very fast application (both starting up and rendering pages).

Tabbed browsing and a pop-up stopper are, of course, included as standard. The latter can also foil other irritations such as scrolling status bar messages and 'spoofed' (false) URLs in the address bar to which IE is prone.

Features include improved privacy which prevents websites installing applications on your PC without your knowledge (you need to authorise a site first). Privacy is also improved with the addition of a master password for protecting all saved passwords.

Live Bookmarks lets you bookmark RSS feeds and display the article headlines in the bookmarks panel - simply click one to be taken to the article.

Numerous extensions are available to add extra functionality to the browser, including a great Calendar and a powerful set of web developer tools.

The latest 1.5.0.7 contains a few security fixes and product stability improvements.
