Netsky still top of the virus charts

A roundup of the February virus and spam statistics has shown that Netsky is still the most common virus on the internet, despite all major software vendors having a signature file available for over a year.

Sophos, Fortinet and SoftScan all put Netsky at the top of their monthly chart, and the virus accounted for an average of 18 per cent of all virus detections.

Mytob has also proved commonplace, according to Kaspersky Lab, accounting for a third of all viruses detected last month.

"Netsky does not have an expiration date, nor does it conform to the tactic of staying under the antivirus vendors' radars, which has no doubt contributed to its longevity in the top five," said Diego d'Ambra, chief technical officer at SoftScan.

"However, more worrying is that its apparent staying power is probably due to unprotected computers.

"Compared to other viruses the number of Netsky infected machines is remarkably high considering that the last outbreak was in 2004, plenty of time for users to have cleaned up."

Kaspersky also reported a quieter month as more and more people got the message about updating antivirus software. The company noted that Sober, the top worm of 2005, has dropped off the virus charts completely for the first time.

Rebellion grows over AOL pay-for-email plan

AOL has announced that it will start charging to send emails in an attempt to cut down on spam.

The company will now define two forms of email: AOL 'certified' and AOL 'normal'. Companies that pay for certified mail will be able to bypass spam filters, at a cost of $3 to $4 per 1,000 emails.

AOL will still send 'normal' emails but these could fall prey to spam filters if they contain URLs or attachments.

A consortium of over 50 organisations is organising a fight for the right to free email after AOL announced its plans for a fee charging service.

Security software house Kaspersky is warning of a new mobile virus that does not just target smartphones but any mobile capable of running Java (J2ME) applications.

The malware claims to be an application called RedBrowser, which allows mobile users to access WAP services without using a WAP connection by using a free SMS service.

In fact it sends data to a premium SMS service which charges around $5 per message.

The mobile owner has to download the software themselves, either via Bluetooth or from a WAP site or the internet.

So far only one copy of the malware has been found in the wild, targeting subscribers of Russian mobile service providers Beeline, MTS and Megafon.
